It is often said that the more you carry in your head, the less you need to carry in your pockets. This is extremely important to remember. Murphy's law will get you every time so make sure your lighter or whatever else you have to start a fire with isn't the only way to start a fire in a real or practice survival situation. Fire can easily mean the difference between life and death and at the very least can turn just about any outdoor situation from tough to fun.

The experience and knowledge to be able to start a fire without any devises in your pockets is optimal. But of course, who wouldn't carry at least a couple other fire starting tools with them before going into the woods? Redundancy is extremely important. It is best to have several fire starting tools as well as tinder on you. Go ahead and test yourself. Next time it's cold and rainy, go outside and try to start a fire with your lighter or even a ferrocerrium rod and see how well you do. This simple test could convince even the non smoker to carry a lighter with them. Now what if the lighter breaks or runs out of fuel? Before you go about finding the materials and making a fire bow, look in your pocket for the various survival fire starters you put there.
